What is this?
👋 I'm a British-Georgian Product Manager generally based in the UK and this is my personal website. I've owned this domain for many years and I've played around with building various things but never really settled on what to do until recently.
It's nice to have a space that is just truly mine even if it does nothing valuable. No 3rd party owner who can delete, change, advertise over, manipulate, or just disappear overnight (well, the webhost can I guess).
Today it serves as my personal portfolio/showcase/playground.
Why?
So there are 3 objectives I am working towards with this:
- Develop my own technical skillset
- Gain the ability to show said technical skills
- A place for fun on the crappified internet
For #2, this is pretty important for job seeking. I am pretty awkward at interviews, mainly due to my more humble nature. Or at least that’s what I blame it on. I don’t like selling myself in a private scenario. I can tell people stories of how I know X or Y, but it’s quite difficult to really prove it without evidence.
Essentially, most of the work done for this site is for #1: I am building everything myself (using libraries, communities and AI for help), and what I build is driven by what I want to learn more about — subject to it being within a reachable difficulty level from where I am at the time.
This explanation and transparency however is targeting #2.
As for #3, well, the internet is getting crappier and dying. I’m getting old for sure, so some of it is just the nostalgia drug talking, but today everything is so monetised and clean and standardised. I read a love letter to personal websites by Sophie Koonin. It’s a creative artform that is dying and for sure AI will not be saving it. At the moment I will also be making boring stuff but hopefully I will make a few fun and ridiculous things…
